Microchipping & Registration

A simple step that keeps your pet safe — and legally compliant.

Microchipping is a legal requirement in NSW and a vital part of responsible pet ownership. It gives your pet a permanent form of identification and dramatically increases the chances of being reunited if they’re lost. Registration is the next step — ensuring your contact details are connected to your pet’s chip for life.

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny implant (about the size of a grain of rice) placed just under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades. It’s quick, safe, and can be done during a regular consult or alongside desexing.

Each chip contains a unique ID number linked to your pet’s profile in a national database. It’s not a tracker — but it does help vets, councils, and shelters reunite pets with their families.

NSW Registration Requirements

In NSW, all dogs and cats must be:

  • Microchipped by 12 weeks of age, or before being sold or given away

  • Registered with your local council by 6 months of age (dogs) or 4 months (cats)

Once your pet is microchipped, you’ll need to:

  • Create an account on the NSW Pet Registry

  • Search for and claim your pet using their microchip number

  • Complete their lifetime registration

  • Update their record after desexing for a reduced fee

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Microchipping takes just a few seconds and most pets barely notice it. The procedure can be done during a regular appointment or combined with desexing, vaccinations, or a new pet checkup.
